In 1979 the Kuhn company built a new organ for the Laurenzenkirche in Sankt-Gallen. The existing neo-Gothic organ cases were used in the construction, which were connected by a new positive organ. A lot of pipework (about 25 stops) was also taken over from the old organ, a work by Martin Braun from 1856. On May 20, 1979 the organ was put into use.
In 2004 the organ was restored and partly rebuilt by Kuhn, on the occasion of a restoration of the interior of the church building. In addition, on the Hauptwerk the Nachthorn 8' has been replaced by a Flûte Harmonique 8' and the Quinte 2 2/3' by a Gambe 8'. On the Schwellwerk, the Terzzimbel was replaced by a Terz 1 3/5' and the Clairon 4' by a nineteenth-century Oboe 8'. On the pedal, the Blockflöte 2' was replaced by a Violoncello 8'.
In 2020 a plan has been made for the construction of a new organ by Goll, that will be located on three locations in the church (West, North and South galleries), and that completely incorporates the Kuhn organ of 1979/2004. The only modification on the instrument was that the Gamba 8' from the Hauptwerk has been replaced with a Quinte 2 2/3'. The three new divisions can be played from the central console of the Kuhn organ, on any keyboard. A fourth manual (Solo) has been added, where registers of the West Organ and the South Organ can be selected.
The enlarged organ was completed in 2023, and could be dedicated on September 3rd, 2023. During the church service the organ was played by the church's own organist, Bernhard Ruchti, who was also the consultant during the construction. The inauguration concert was played by Thomas Trotter at the end of the afternoon.
