- The organ builder Lambertus-Benoit Van Peteghem was one of the first builders to create an organ in two parts, to prevent a window from being covered by the instrument. This design was used for his organ in Gijzegem from 1776. One year later, he started with the construction of a new organ in the Sint Ludgeruskerk in Zele, using almost the same concept. The organ was completed in 1780.
- The organ has not been preserved in its original state. In 1945, Joseph Loncke rebuilt the organ with a free-standing console with electropneumatic action, but the original slider chests were re-used. Consultant was Gabriël Verschraegen. The organ was put back into use on March 3, 1946. It was played on this occasion by Gabriël Verschraegen and Edgard Mertens.
- During a resoration by the company Potvlieghe-De Maeyer in the years 1981-1986, the organ has been reconstructed to its original specification. Antoon Fauconnier was consultant during the restoration.
