Lambert Daniël Karstens built a new main organ for the Domkirke in Århus in the years 1730-1736. The beautiful organ case has wood carvings by Christen Mortensen, and the statues were made by Ulrich Mathissen, and his son Mathias Ulrichsen after his death in 1736. In 1750 repairs were made by Amdi Worm. He also replaced the pedal's Nachthorn 2' with a Quint 1 1/2', and added a Mixtur 6 kor to the pedal. Johan Andreas Demant carried out a number of repairs in the mid-nineteenth century, including changes to the disposition.
The organ was rebuilt in 1876 by Johan Andreas Demant. Part of the existing pipework has been taken over, but the disposition has been adapted to the ideas of its time. The instrument was revised in 1901 by Frederik Nielsen. He replaced the Gemshorn 4' of the second manual with a Fugara 4', and expanded the piano pedal with a Fagott 16'. The third manual was largely renewed by him and placed in a swell box, with new registers such as an Aeoline and a Vox Celeste.
In 1927-1928 the organ was rebuilt by Frobenius in the old cases. The design was influenced by the Orgelbewegung and by the ideas of Albert Schweitzer. Frobenius used a lot of old pipework in its construction. The organ now became a four-manual organ with 83 registers. In 1940 the fourth manual was expanded with five registers (Tertz 1 3/5', Kleinfløjte 1', Zimbelfløjte 1/2', Tertscymbel 3 fag (1/4'), Regal 4'). On the pedal, the Salicetbas 16' was replaced by a Mixtur 5-6 fag.
Frobenius restored the instrument in 1959 and 1983. Some modifications were also made during the last restoration. In 1993 a new Setzer installation was installed and the action was electrified.
