  • In 1835 John Smith built a large new organ for Bath Abbey. The old instrument had been built around 1718, probably by Abram Jordan. It was enlarged in 1802 by John Holland. In the new organ Smith used almost no material from the previous instrument.
  • In 1895 Norman & Beard dismantled the instrument and after restoration and modification rebuilt it in five sections. The old case was placed in the parish church of St Peter and Paul in Cromer, Norfolk in 1897. Swell and Choir were placed in the north aisle under the tower, while Great and Solo were placed in the south aisle. The pedal was placed in two sections in the north transept. The organ was given a free-standing movable console, which was located in the north-west of the church, under the tower. This arrangement was not very favourable for the sound of the instrument, and also had many disadvantages for the organist. Therefore the entire instrument was placed in a new case in 1914. This case is still in use. In 1914 some of the registers were also replaced.
  • In 1948 a new Tuba 8' was installed on the Solo Organ, and the wind supply was renewed. Another restoration followed in 1962. Because the instrument nevertheless showed more and more defects, it was decided to rebuild it completely. In 1972 the work started, carried out by Hill, Norman & Beard. The disposition was drastically altered, the action was made electro-pneumatic. The console was largely reused, but the keyboards were renewed. Due to the changes the organ now was more suitable for all literature, while the old instrument was mainly suitable for romantic music.
  • In 1997 the organ was completely rebuilt and renewed by the Klais company. The church organist, Peter King, and Nicolas Kynaston were the consultants during the work. Approximately half of the existing pipes were reused. On 3 October 1997 the instrument was re-dedicated.
