The instrument in the Westerkerk is very old. The case dates from 1549 and was almost certainly made by Adriaen Schalcken for an organ by Hendrik Niehoff. It had three manuals and an attached pedal, but nothing is known of this old organ. From March 1679 Roelof and Johannes Duyschot made a new organ in the old case, which was completed in 1683. They did use a lot of the existing pipework. The instrument was overhauled in 1741 by Christiaan Müller. The Van Dam brothers restored the organ again in the years 1837/1838, thanks to a gift by the widow A. de Vries. In 1888 they replaced the bellows with a new one. The organist at this time, R.G. Crévecoeur, advised not to restore the organ, but to replace it with a new and contemporary instrument.
In 1896 the interior was removed from the organ case, and the company Steenkuyl & Recourt built a new organ in the old case. It was a pneumatic instrument with two manuals and an independent pedal. The keyboard was slid into the rugwerk, which furthermore remained empty. The organ could be inaugurated on Wednesday May 3rd, 1899.
In the year 1955, the Flentrop company made some changes to the stop list. The Cornet on the Hoofdwerk was replaced by a Sexquialter, the Salicionaal on the Bovenwerk by a Principal 4', the Vox Célèste by a Flute 2', and an Octave 4' was placed on the Pedal in stead of the Cello 8'. The Salicet 4' of the Bovenwerk was moved up to a Quint 2 2/3'.
From 1986 until 1990 organ builder Jan Bruijn maintained the Steenkuyl organ. He made a new three manual mechanical console and a new windchest for nine stops on the Rugwerk. The prospect pipes of Duyschot were connected for the Prestant 8'. Bruijn also modified some stops at the Hoofdwerk and Bovenwerk.
In 2003 Flentrop removed the complete interior of the organ. The Steenkuyl pipes are stored in the church with the purpose to use them to construct a second organ in the church. However, these plans were later cancelled. The organ case was restored by Flentrop in 2010-2011, including the prospect pipes from 1681. The material from Steenkuyl will be used in the construction of a new organ for De Poort on Urk by Ide Boogaard in 2022-2023.
In 2018 three organ builders were asked to make a plan for a new organ in the Niehoff case. The choice fell on the plan of the Verschueren company. The first phase in the construction of the organ was completed in 2021.
