- The Saint Michael's Church in Harlingen was designed by Alfred Tepe in Gothic-Revival style and built in the years 1877-1881. The Adema organ from the previous parish church was sold to a priest in Manchester, England. An organ for the new church was not completed until years later. It was built by the company P.J. Adema & Zn. in Amsterdam. The front was designed by Friedrich Wilhelm Mengelberg. The organ was mainly financed from a donation by Hermanus Schrage. The organ was dedicated on June 20, 1898. It was played on this occasion by Johann Silvester Ponten, organist of the Church of Our Lady in Zwolle. The instrument had mechanical action with slider chests, and a free-standing console between the two organ cases.
- During the night of November 4 to 5, 1941, the instrument was damaged by a bombardment. The church building was subsequently restored and consecrated again in 1948. The organ was rebuilt in 1949-1950 by the Adema-Schreurs company with 22 stops, electric action and a new console. The second manual was placed in a swell box. Consultant was Dr. P.J. de Bruyn. The organ was dedicated on February 17, 1950 with a concert by Albert de Klerk.
- The organ was restored by Adema in the years 2000-2003. The original Vox Humana was preserved and placed on Manual II, and the Sexquialter of this work was replaced by a new Trumpet Harmonic in 2003. On the pedal, the Openflute 4' was replaced by a Cello 8'.
- The organ subsequently became contaminated as a result of plastering work in the church. It was cleaned by Adema in 2022 and repaired where necessary.
