- T.C. Lewis built an organ for Knox Presbyterian Church in Dunedin in 1884. The organ had three manuals and pedal with 24 registers. It was replaced in 1931 by a new organ from Hill, Norman & Beard. The old cathedral in Napier was destroyed by an earthquake in February 1931. In 1932 a wooden emergency church was put into use. The organ from Dunedin came in handy for this and has been transferred without any changes.
- After 1932 the organ was maintained by Norman & Beard. A few years after the transfer, Swell's Clarionet was replaced by a Vox Humana. The Clarionet moved to Choir, where the Dulciana was removed. In 1938 Lawton & Osborne rebuilt the organ. The organ now had pneumatic action and 25 stops.
- During the construction of a new cathedral, it was decided to transfer the Lewis organ, but also to expand it. In 1959 the instrument was dismantled. A part was quickly placed in the new church, so that the organ could be used at the consecration of the first part on February 24, 1960. The church was inaugurated on March 9, 1965. The organ was completed in 1966. It now had 37 registers on three manuals and pedal and electric action. The work had been carried out by Albert Hayman and was finished by John Lee.
- The organ was rebuilt and enlarged in 1972-1974 by George Croft & Son.
