- Christ Church in Reading was built in 1861-1862 and was designed by Henry Woodyer. The organ was built in 1872 by Henry Jones. In 1886 the instrument was renovated and expanded by the same company. The four registers that started on Tenor C (c°) were completed with the lowest octave. Great was expanded with an Open Diapason 8' (small) and a Harmonic Flute 4', and Swell with a Salicional 8', Hohl Flute 8' and Oboe 8'. The Choir was enlarged with a Rohr Flute and the Pedal with a Bourdon.
- The firm of Gray & Davison maintained the organ for many years. In 1932-1933 they carried out a renovation. The track was electrified, a new free-standing console was installed in the Lady Chapel and the disposition was expanded.
- The organ was renovated in 1961-1962 by Gray & Davison. The intonation has been revised, the console has been adjusted, and the instrument has been cleaned and technically optimized. The Large Open Diapason from Great has been renewed. The pedal was extended with a Quint 10 2/3', derived from the Open Diapason, and a Voix Celeste has been placed on Swell.
- Around 1985 the organ was in poor condition, and there was no money for a restoration. In January 1987, an electronic organ from the Makin Organ Company was installed in the church, with three manuals and pedal, and 62 registers.
