In the years 1824-1828, St. Thomas Church was erected in Port Macquarie by prisoners who were stationed here. The church is one of the oldest brick churches in Australia. In 1857, a pipe organ was installed, built in 1856 by the company Walker & Sons. It is a one-manual organ with five stops and pull down pedals. The instrument can be played with the keyboard, or by using the barrel. The organ was located on the gallery at the west side of the church. In 1868 it was moved to the church floor, in the left corner to the rear of the church room. H.W. Jarrott restored the instrument in 1969-1970 and reinstalled it on the gallery.
