- In the beginning of 1966 the company Flentrop got the order to build a three-manual organ for Carnegie Hall in New York City. It could be ordered thanks to a gift by Leo Simon. It was meant to be installed on the back wall of the stage. The Kilgen organ from 1929 that was installed in the Hall was removed. The purpose was to install the organ in Fall 1966, when Carnegie Hall existed 75 years, but there was too much work to do to make it on this date. The plans were modified with a focus on installation in 1968.
- However, there was resistence against the installation of this organ on the stage. People were afraid that the good acoustics of the concert hall would be ruined. In 1977 the organ was donated by mrs. Simon to the State University of New York, and it was installed in the concert hall of the Performing Arts Center in Purchase, New York in 1979. The organ is installed on a moving platform, with a kind of hovercraft beneath.
