  • The Basilique Notre-Dame in Valenciennes was completed in 1864. In 1888, Mrs. Veuve Edouard Hamoir donated money for the construction of two organs in the church. The company Merklin was commissioned to build a main organ, which was built in 1889-1891. It was an organ with four manuals and pedal and 54 stops. Merklin also built a choir organ, that can be played from the fourth manual of the main console.
  • In 1902 the organ was overhauled by Joseph Gutschenritter, who carried out some minor modifications. The organ remained unchanged for a long time. Emil Müller maintained the organ from 1952. He made some changes in the stoplist in the years around 1965. The plan was to modify all manuals, but that plan was canceled due to lack of money. In particular, the Positif was renewed. Here the Gambe 8', Gemshorn 8', Unda Maris 8 ', Prestant 4', Flûte Octaviante 4' and Jeu de Clochette 3 ranks were replaced by new stops.
  • Over time, the instrument fell into disrepair and became very polluted, making playing virtually impossible. In 1989, organists Bruno Strangis and Yves Yollant started an overhaul. In five years they cleaned the organ and repaired many defects. The Delmotte company supported them and also restored some parts. In 1995 the organ was festively inaugurated again. In addition to the main organ, the choir organ has also been restored.
  • Michel Jurine carried out new restoration works in 2015-2016.
