  • In 1683, Renatus Harris and Bernard Smith were both commissioned to build a new organ for Temple Church in London. Smith's organ was installed on the division line of the nave and the choir of the church. After several years, it was decided in 1688 that Smith's organ would be purchased, while Harris could disassemble his organ and take it back. Smith's organ had three manuals with 23 stops. A special feature was that there were two extra keys per octave, so that dis and es and gis and as had their own keys. These keys were on top of the normal black keys, about halfway down the key length.
  • In 1730 Schreider installed the Echo Organ in a swell box. John Byfield replaced this work in 1741 with a new Swell Organ with six stops. The organ was converted by Bishop in 1843 and equipped with a new organ case. It was now placed on the north side of the nave of the church. The organ now also got an independent pedal with eighteen keys (C-f°). In 1849 Thomas Robson replaced this with a full pedal with thirty tones (C-f').
  • In the following years, the organ was rebuilt and expanded several times, including by Thomas Robson (1856), Edmund Schulze (1862), Forster & Andrews (1878, extension with Solo Organ and pneumatic action) and Norman & Beard (1896, mainly restoration work). The maintenance was transferred to Frederick Rothwell in 1898, who re-voiced the organ and placed a new Echo Dulciana 8' on the Choir Organ. In 1910 Rothwell rebuilt the organ, which now had sixty stops, four manuals and a pedal. The organ still contained a lot of Smith's pipework. However, it was lost to bombing in 1940.
