In 1704 Johann Weißhaupt built an organ for the church of Buttelstedt. It was converted and expanded by Wilhelm Trebs in 1774. The current form dates from 1857/1858, when Karl Friedrich Peternell completely rebuilt and modernized the instrument. Only five stops have been fully preserved from before 1857. Johann Gottlob Töpfer examined the organ in 1858. In 1935 Emil Heerwagen worked on the instrument. In 2018 a restoration was carried ou by Georg Wünning. The situatiion of 1857 was retained.
