As a result of an earthquake in 1994, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint Vibiana in California went into such a bad state that the construction of a new cathedral became necessary. This church was built to a design by Rafael Moneo and dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels. The Dobson Pipe Organ Company built a four-manual new organ, taking over a lot of pipe work from the organ of Saint Vibiana. This organ was built in 1929 by Wangerin Organ Company from Milwaukee and rebuilt in 1988 by the Austin Organ Company as opus 2721. The new organ is equipped with slider chests and electric action. The Fanfare Division, Solo Division and the pedal have an electro-pneumatic action. The pedal and solo divison construction was inspired by the organ built by Isnard for the church of Saint-Maximin-en-Var in France. The front was designed by the organ makers in collaboration with Rafael Moneo. Consultants during the construction of the organ were Frank Brownstead, music director of the cathedral and Manuel Rosales on behalf of the Archdiocese.
