- Jean Baptiste le Picard built a large organ for the basilica in Tongeren in the years 1750-1752. The organ was built in Flemish Baroque style. The beautiful organ case was constructed by Meester Jean-Pierre Heuvelman (Liège), working for Martin Benoît Termonia, after a design of Louis Lejeune, carpenter in Liège. Several major renovations followed in the nineteenth century by, among others, Merklin-Schütze (1859), the Gebr. Müller (1860-1871, they supplied 19 new stops) and Charles Anneessens (1879-1882). With still a lot of original material, a large romantic organ had now been created.
- Under the advice of, among others, Gabriel Verschraegen, the Verschueren company restored the organ as opus 160 in 1944-1948, based on the original specification, supplemented with various innovations. The mechanical action was replaced by an electro-pneumatic one with a freestanding console. Only a small part of the old pipework has now been preserved. On January 25, 1948, the instrument was inaugurated with a solemn consecration, followed by a concert by Staf Nees from Mechelen and Albert van den Born, organist of the Basilica in Tongeren.
- In 1997 André Thomas started the job of reconstructing the organ in its original state. The advisor for the works was Michel Lemmens. Almost all the pipework is new made according to the historic measurements. In 2002 the organ was dedicated. That happened with a festive organ festival. Luc Ponet played the first concert on May 24, 2002, followed by Michel Chapuis on May 25, 2002.
