The first synagogue in North America to receive a pipe organ is the Beth Elohim Synagogue in Charleston, South Carolina. This organ was built by Henry Erben in 1841. The organ was rebuilt in a new organ case by Mandeville in 1872. It was later converted by the Austin firm. In 1995, Allan Ontko built a new organ for the church, reusing Erben's existing pipework. The organ was inaugurated in 1996.
