• When the new Klais organ was built in 1987, a large part of the pipework from the previous organ of the Dom Church, built by Klais in 1957, was used. Klais placed this instrument on the Stephanuschor with a open facade with freestanding pipework. The new Klais organ was placed on the church floor in a new organ case. The front of the organ was designed by Elmar Hillebrand and Theo Heiermann in collaboration with Dietmar Schmitz of the Klais company. Consultant was Ekkehard Stier.
  
• The organ was overhauled in 2002. The wind pressure was increased, various registers were changed and the Positiv included some new voices with a French-romantic character. Klais also built an auxiliary work on the west facade of the Cathedral, which can be played as an independent organ, but can also be played from the console of the main organ.
