Het hoofdorgel van de Salzburger Domkirche is oorspronkelijk een werkstuk uit 1703 van Johann Christoph Egedacher, dat hij vervaardigde samen met zijn zonen Johann Christoph en Johann Ignaz. Het had 24 stemmen, maar het werd al drie jaar later door Johann Christoph uitgebreid tot 41 stemmen. Het werd hierna nog vele malen vergroot. Ludwig Moser bouwde het instrument in de jaren 1841-1844 om tot een nog groter orgel met 60 stemmen, waarvan nog 23 van Egedacher. Matthias Mauracher vergrootte het in de jaren 1880-1882 tot 70 stemmen. De mechaniek maakte hij in 1914 electro-pneumatisch. Het had nu 101 stemmen, en was het grootste orgel van Oostenrijk. Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het door Dreher & Reinisch nog groter gemaakt: 120 stemmen. In 1988 voltooide de firma Metzler een nieuw binnenwerk met mechanische sleepladen, dat wat dispositie betreft aansluit bij het werk van Egedacher uit 1703 en 1706.
