  • Hans Scherer (jr) built a new organ for the Stephanskirche in Tangermünde in 1623/1624. In 1711-1716 Johann Michael Röder converted the instrument. During a restoration of the church in the years 1844-1854 it was damaged, after which it was repaired in 1856-1858 by Friedrich Lütkemüller. The organ has been considerably modified, but half of the old pipework remains. In 1929 Furtwängler & Hammer expanded the organ with a swell and the pitch was brought to a'=435 Hz. Plans for restoration and reconstruction were made as early as the 1930s.
  • In 1980 a restoration of the interior of the church started. The organ was no longer playable and was disassembled and stored in 1983. The organ case was restored in the years 1990-1992 by Paul Schuster from Magdeburg and restored to its old form and placed back in the church. The interior was completely reconstructed in the old style by the firm Alexander Schuke from 1992. More than half of the original pipework was still present, and from only four stops all of Scherer's material had disappeared. On September 24, 1994, the instrument was taken back into use with a concert by the regular organist of the church, Christoph Lehmann.
  • In 2019 the Rückpositif was expanded with two new reeds.
