- The history of the current main organ of Trinity College Chapel begins after the Restoration with the construction of a new organ by Thomas Thamer in the years 1661-1663. According to the account books, Bernhard Smith built a 'New Organ' in 1693-1694, but it is not clear whether this was a completely new instrument, or a radical extension of the existing work. In any case, it is assumed that the current case of the the Chaire Organ dates from 1694. The main case was completed in its current form in 1708, but it contains older parts, which may date back to Thamer's instrument. Around 1705/1706, Bernhard Smith was commissioned to renew the organ. He rebuilt the instrument with three manuals, in which the existing organ cases were reused. The case of the main work has been modified and the facade has been modernized. Smith died before the organ was completed. It was completed by his son-in-law and successor, Christopher Shrider. In this form, the organ persisted for a long time. There was regular maintenance, however, and minor changes were made over time. The organ has also been extended with an independent pedal with a few stops.
- In 1835/1836 the organ was rebuilt by John Gray. Gray modernized the organ by placing a full pedal, expanding the manual compass, adding new reeds and adding several new stops. In 1853 Hill renewed the wind chests of Great. Hill completely rebuilt the organ in 1870. The cases were expanded with two intermediate fields and two towers. The new instrument received 59 stops, four manuals and pedal. Charles Villiers Stanford became organist of this organ in 1874. In 1889 the mechanical action was replaced by pneumatics. Hill now placed a so-called 'front choir' with four ranks in the old chaire case, which had been empty since 1870. In 1913, Harrison & Harrison expanded the organ to 74 stops. Alan Gray was the consultant for the work. The interior of the organ was dismantled in 1975. Only the historical material of Smith that is still present has been preserved.
- Under consultancy of Bernhard Edskes, the company Metzler built a new organ in 1974-1976. The organ was placed in the old organ case from 1694/1708 by Father Bernard Smith. Some of Smith's pipework is also included in the new instrument. The organ was dedicated in July 1976. Metzler carried out an overhaul in 2001.
