In 1849 bouwde William Hill een nieuw orgel in de kathedraal van Ely. De kas werd ontworpen door Gilbert Scott. Het ontwerp was geïnspireerd door het orgel in de kathedraal van Straatsburg. Het orgel verkeerde in 1907 in slechte staat, waarna men besloot Arthur Harrison een nieuw orgel te laten bouwen in de bestaande kas. Dit orgel kreeg vier manualen en pedaal. Michael Howard werkte in 1956 aan het orgel. Hij wijzigde het Choir Organ: de Fluit 4' werd Fluit 2', de Salicet 4' werd Nasard en de Dulcet 2' werd een Terts. In 1962 is op advies van organist Arthur Wills de winddruk verlaagd en zijn de tongwerken van Great en pedaal opnieuw geïntoneerd. Een grote restauratie in de jaren 1974-1975 had verschillende wijzigingen tot gevolg. In de kas werd een nieuw positief geplaatst, het pedaal kreeg een andere indeling, de console is gemoderniseerd en de mechaniek verbeterd. Adviseur bij deze werkzaamheden was Arthur Wills.
