1977 Harrison & Harrison  restoration

  • The enormous organ in Liverpool Cathedral was built from 1912 to 1926 by Henry Willis & Sons. The organ designer was mr. W.J. Ridley, who invented the stop list in 1905. The cathedral's organ committee received £ 10,000 from Mrs. Barrow. After she donated even more money, the plan for the organ was expanded. Henry Willis started construction in 1912. Construction in the church could not begin until 1923. on July 19, 1924 it first sounded with church chants, but finally on October 18, 1926 it was put into use in its entirety. The organ has 145 stops, with only 2 transmissions applied. It was the largest pipe organ that had ever been built until then.
  • Originally the organ had a pneumatic action, but during a restoration in the years 1958-1960 the action was made electric. The organ has six works, which can be played from a large five-manual console. There is also a smaller console with two keyboards, which is mobile.
  • In 1997 a new high pressure stop was installed in the Corona Gallery, right under the vault of the tower: the Trompette Militaire. Also a Tuba Magna was added that year. In 2007 a new central division was installed.
