- The large organ in the Cathedral of Nantes was built by François-Henri Clicquot in 1784. He constructed an instrument with five manuals and an independent pedal. It had 49 stops. Pipework from the previous organ was also used by him, which was built in 1619 by Jacques Girardet, and was subsequently enlarged and modified several times. The organ of Clicquot was spared during the revolution years thanks to the efforts of the organist Denis Joubert. In 1866 it was restored by Merklin-Schütze, with some minor modifications being carried out.
- During a renovation in 1932-1933 by the company Gloton-Debierre, the action was made pneumatic. The organ was then re-dedicated on February 19, 1933, with a concert by Louis Vierne.
- The instrument was damaged during World War II. It was not until 1971 that it was fully restored, by the company Beuchet-Debierre. The action was rebuilt to electro-pneumatic. On November 21, 1971 the renewed organ was inaugurated with a concert by the organist-titular Félix Moreau and guest organist Gaston Litaize.
- On July 18, 2020, a large fire in the cathedral destroyed the main organ completely. The choir organ was damaged: the console was lost.
