Het orgel in de Saint Sulpice is gebouwd door Clicquot in 1781. Het had vijf manualen, vrij pedaal en 64 stemmen. Het is in gebruik genomen van 11 tot 15 mei 1781. In de eerste helft van de negentiende eeuw is aan het orgel gewerkt door Charles Barker, Joseph Callinet en Jean Somer. Aristide Cavaillé-Coll bouwde het instrument in de jaren 1857-1862 volledig om, en breidde het uit tot 100 stemmen. De ingebruikname was op 29 april 1862. Het orgel werd hierbij door vijf organisten bespeelde: Camille Saint-Saëns, César Franck, Auguste Bazille, G. Schmitt en Alexandre Guilmant. In 1904 werd de volgorde van de klavieren gewijzigd. Het Bombarde (III) werd nu Solo (V), terwijl Positif en Récit opschoven.
