- Het orgel in York Minster heeft 84 stemmen op vier manualen en pedaal. Het totaal aantal pijpen bedraagt 5282. De geschiedenis van het instrument begint na de brand in het oude orgel op 1 februari 1829. Het ging toen geheel verloren. De firma Elliot & Hill maakte een nieuw instrument in 1834, geplaatst op het oxaal. De speelaard was enorm zwaar, zodat het geen succes werd.
- De firma Hill and Son bouwde een nieuw orgel, een zogenaamd nave organ, geplaatst aan de noordkant van het schip. Het andere instrument, het screen organ bleef ook staan. In 1903 werd het nave organ verwijderd. De firma J.W. Walker & Sons bouwden op advies van Thomas Tertius Noble het screen orgel volledig om, zodat het aan twee kanten te horen was. Aan het einde van de jaren twintig werd de tractuur volledig electro-pneumatisch gemaakt door Harrison & Harrison. De winddruk werd verhoogd, en er kwam een nieuwe speeltafel op het oxaal.
- De firma Walker werkte in 1960 aan het orgel, met als adviseur organist Francis Jackson. Er kwam een nieuwe speeltafel bij in het schip van de kerk, en de dispositie werd op verschillende punten helderder gemaakt. Bij een brand in de kathedraal op 9 juli 1984 liep het orgel schade op door rook, as en bluswater. Een totale restauratie was nodig, die in de jaren 1992/1993 door Geoffrey Coffin van de firma Principal Pipe Organs werd uitgevoerd. Adviseurs waren John Scott Whitely en Philip Moore. Het orgel is sindsdien vooral gericht op het koor. Er bestaan plannen voor de bouw van een nieuw nave organ.
