Friedrich Wilhelm Schwarz was born on July 10, 1874 as the son of the organ builder Wilhelm Schwarz (1848-1912), who worked from Überlingen. He started working for his father at a young age. After his death on January 20, 1912, he took over the company. From 1929 the company was managed by a cousin, Friedrich Wilhelm Schwarz der Jüngere, born in 1906. Due to financial problems, he was involved in dubious business, and he was convicted for this. Friedrich Wilhelm Schwarz (der Ältere) died in Überlingen on January 11, 1936. In 1937, after the conviction of junior, the company was continued by Josef Schwarz (1890-1959), another cousin. In 1955 the company was taken over by Eugen Pfaff.
