Johann Michael Bittner was born on April 9, 1816 in Freystadt as the son of the organ builder Augustin Ferdinand Bittner. He moved with his parents to Nürnberg in 1829, and started his own business there in 1853, a few years after the death of his father on October 3, 1850. In 1871 his brother Augustin Ferdinand (II) took over his business. Johann Michael died in Nürnberg on January 15, 1896.
