Johann Matthäus Schmahl was born in Ulm on May 1, 1734 as the son of the organ builder Georg Friedrich Schmahl (1700-1773). He continued his father's business in 1773, together with his brother Georg Friedrich (1748-1827). Johann Matthäus died in Ulm on November 24, 1793.
