Joseph (I) Bittner was born on June 2, 1822 in Hilpolstein, the son of Franz Joseph Bittner (1780-1863). He first worked for his father, but in 1852 he established himself as an independent organ builder in Eichstätt. His sons Josef Franz (or Joseph II) and Max also became organ builders. After 1890, Max started working for the März company. Josef Franz worked with his father. In 1880 he took over the workshop from his second cousin Augustin Ferdinand Bittner (1817-1879) in Nürnberg. This workshop was closed in 1897, after which he returned to his father in Eichstätt. Joseph sr. died in Eichstätt on April 28, 1908.
