Gerard or Gerrit Simon Hooghuys was born in Wormer in North Holland, where he was baptized on January 1, 1754. He settled as an organ builder in Middelburg, before 1780. In 1806 he moved the workshop to Bruges, but in 1810 he returned to Middelburg, where he died on January 24, 1813. Gerard Hooghuys mainly carried out repairs and built several small organs. His son Simon Gerrit (1780-1853) became a more important organ builder in the city of Bruges.
