Paul Schmidt werd geboren in 1715 of 1716. Hij was hoforgelmaker in de stad Rostock, waar hij op 1798 overleed. Het vak leerde hij bij Caspar Sperling. Na de dood van Sperling in 1745 vestigde Schmidt zich in Rostock.
