The Merklin company built a new organ for the Saint-Nizier church in Lyon in 1885/1886. It was the first organ built with a combination of electric and pneumatic action. On 15 September 1885 it could be played for the first time in Merklin's workshop. Paul Trillat gave a concert that day. The organ was then erected in Lyon, where it was consecrated on 1 April 1886. The organ was set up on the west side of the church, on the gallery. But the Positif was located in the chancel, where the console was also placed.
