Spencer and Julie Penrose bought a fine house in Colorado Springs in 1916, built in 1910 in a Southern style. In 1937 they founded the El Pomar Foundation. They commissioned the Aeolian Organ Company to build a large concert organ. This instrument was completed in 1916 and expanded in 1924. Spencer died in 1939 and Julie moved to elsewhere in 1944. After this the building was used by the Sisters of Charity of the El Pomar Foundation. It was renamed El Pomar Retreat Center, changed to Julie Penrose Center in 1985. Since the departure of the sisters in 1992, the building has been converted by the foundation into a non-profit conference center. The organ is still present and well playable. It is one of the few older Aeolian instruments that has survived unaltered.
