1929 Norman & Beard Hill  new organ
2001 Schantz Organ Company  restoration

  • The Town Hall in Melbourne has a huge organ. It was built in the years 1926-1929. The previous organ of the Town Hall, by William Hill & Son from 1872, was lost in a fire in 1925. This organ originally had 66 stops and was extended in 1906, after which inaugurated with a concert by Edwin H. Lemare. The new organ has a front designed by Stephenson & Meldrum. In 1939 Marcel Dupré visited Melbourne, where he played the organ. A few changes were made especially for this occasion. The echo organ was placed in the main case, whereas until then it had been in the south gallery. It was later removed completely. In the seventies a few things were changed again: new couplings and the removal of a few stops of the Great Organ.
  • In 1992 a restoration was planned. The organ has a large number of couplings and playing aids. There were also plans to demolish the organ. However, it was completely restored in 2001 by the Schantz company. The organ has two consoles, one fixed to the organ and one freestanding on the podium in front of the organ.
