- The Silbermann organ in Marmoutier is the first larger organ built by Andreas Silbermann after his apprenticeship with Thierry in Paris. The instrument is in many ways reminiscent of the Parisian organs of the seventeenth century. At the time of delivery, the organ was not built entirely according to the contract. It had 20 stops on two manuals, but there were still some empty places on the windchests. It was not until 1746 that the organ was completed by his son Johann Andreas with the placement of four new stops on the pedal, a Cromorne on the Positif and a new wind chest for a five-stop echo work. In 1755 Johann Andreas made a new wind installation and repairs followed in 1765, 1767 and 1772. In 1788 the organ was moved from a gallery in the south transept to a new gallery above the west entrance of the church.
- Thanks in part to the poverty of the local population, the organ remained almost completely unchanged. Only the Nazard of the Positif was shifter to a Flûte 4' and the Tierce had been removed. A new pedal keyboard was installed in 1915. The pedal's pipework was then also placed higher, so that it protrudes above the facade of the organ. The appearance of the organ has become less attractive, but the pedal does sound better.
- In 1955 the organ was restored by Alfred Kern and Ernest Muhleisen. During the restoration a new Tierce was placed and the Nazard was reconstructed. Some stops that were in very bad condition have been replaced by exact copies, in particular the Flûte 16' and the Bombarde 16'. On the pedal, the Flûte 16' and 8' did speak permanently. These are equipped with register pullers in 1955. On the advice of Albert Schweitzer, the pedal compass has been increased from 25 to 27 keys. On October 16, 1955 the organ was inaugurated again.
- In 2009-2010 the organ was restored by Quentin Blumenroeder. The pipework of the 1955 Nazard and Tierce has been replaced by new.
